Hello to our loyal customers,
It’s been a while since you’ve heard from us.
We wanted to share some important updates on what’s happening at mel en stel.
At the end of February, a misstep in my studio caused me to fall off a small stepladder and break both bones in my right hand.
Three weeks later, I underwent surgery, and the unexpected downtime during my recovery gave me something I hadn't had in more than twenty years of designing collection after collection: the opportunity to pause.
That pause gave me the space to reflect on our business and make a few changes that had been on my mind for quite some time.
When I first started mel en stel, I created one-of-a-kind pieces using deadstock fabrics and found materials. Those early years remain some of my favorites. I loved the creativity and problem-solving that went into each design, even though producing small quantities of unique pieces in U.S. production facilities was often a challenge. As the business grew, however, days of overseeing production overshadowed my days in the studio, where my ideas come to life.
So, I'm doing the opposite of what business school might recommend: I'm returning to where it all began. Going forward, mel en stel will focus on one-of-a kind pieces and small-batch collections, allowing me to spend more time creating and making.
As part of this shift, we will no longer participate in the Bryant Park Holiday Market. Instead, we'll be focusing on creative, artisan markets throughout NY, NJ, and CT that celebrate independent designers and small businesses.
I'm excited about what’s ahead for mel en stel and look forward to sharing it with you.
Thank you for your continued support, mel en stel couldn't be here without you.
